There has probably never been a time in human history when the ability to make sense of events and to predict the future have been more vital to government, business, law enforcement and national security. It logically follows that there has probably never been a time in human history when access to accurate, relevant and timely intelligence has been more important in order that leaders in all fields of endeavour can make better informed, higher quality decisions. "Introduction to Intelligence Analysis - work in progress" sets out to explain what intelligence is, its different forms, how it is used, and various techniques and approaches that intelligence analysts use to produce intelligence product.  The book presumes no significant prior knowledge, although having an interest in general information analysis and applied research are probably useful factors to a person seeking to learn more about intelligence analysis from reading the book."Introduction to Intelligence Analysis - work in progress" is designed to follow a logical path, from explaining intelligence, the various phases of intelligence production, specific information management and analysis techniques and ends with product dissemination and client feedback.  There are also ethical and political elements at various points in the book in order to keep the analyst focused on meeting the needs of his/her client. Examples and illustrations have been included to cover a range of intelligence applications from national security and military intelligence to law enforcement, compliance and commercial intelligence. Some of the illustrations have been created in computer programs that are specialist intelligence analysis applications, while others were created in mainstream graphics applications, such as CorelDraw® and Visio®.  This is intentional, as it allows the reader to get a feel for what is out there in the marketplace and how ordinary computer programs can be easily adapted to meet an intelligence context.  "Introduction to Intelligence Analysis - work in progress" contains discussion on a number of technical elements, mostly relating to the use of information technology, to assist in intelligence production.  Those readers who are not particularly IT literate should not, however, feel overwhelmed, as these elements can simply be glossed over without the loss of context.    "Introduction to Intelligence Analysis - work in progress" is designed to be the text that accompanies a formal course of study leading to the award of a Diploma of Intelligence Analysis in the Australian tertiary education sphere.  Indeed, aspects of the content have already served that function.  It has, however, undergone a significant rewrite aimed at keeping it consistent with current practice. It does not, however, pretend to be all-encompassing, as to produce such a text would be a mammoth undertaking. If the reader approaches each chapter as a jumping-off point for further research, analysis and contemplation, he/she will hopefully derive significant benefit from the book.  The book is intended to provoke the reader into starting a life-long journey to learn all they can about the subject.  That is why the book is called "Introduction to Intelligence Analysis - work in progress".
